Explore the Targaryen legacy, diving into historical complexities, hidden conflicts, and the renowned house’s tremendous impact on “Westeros” history.
1. Stormborn
Daenerys was born in the ancient seat of Dragonstone, amidst a massive storm. The storm sank all of the ships in her family’s fleet, terrifying those who survived. This is why she occasionally calls herself Daenerys Stormborn.
2. An Orphan
Her father, the “Mad King” Aerys II Targaryen, is the source of her claim to the Iron Throne. Targaryen succeeded to the throne but was deposed in a coup by Robert Baratheon before Daenerys was born. Her mother, Rhaella, was Aerys Targaryen’s sister and wife. She fled to Dragonstone with her son, Viserys, following the death of her eldest, Rhaegar. The queen died giving birth to Daenerys.
3. Ties that Bind
When Daenerys brings Jon Snow into her bed, she unintentionally sleeps with her nephew. However, this is consistent with the Targaryen family policy: Daenerys’ father and mother were brother and sister, and Targaryen royals were supposed to marry among themselves to maintain the purity of the lineage.
4. Famous last words
Speaking of Aerys’ fire fixation, his final words were, “Burn them all!” were intended as an order to his advisors to set off barrels of wildfire that he had ordered placed across King’s Landing. When Tywin Lannister’s men took possession of King’s Landing and began looting, Aerys planned to destroy the city and everyone in it in a blaze of fire. Jaime Lannister, who had pushed the king to submit, took matters into his own hands, killing the pyromancer and Aerys before the orders could be carried out.
5. Guest of Honor
George R.R. Martin did attend Daenerys and Khal Drogo’s wedding in the show, but only in the original pilot, when crucial characters like Catelyn Stark were represented by different actors.
6. Not the first of her name
She routinely refers to herself as the “First of Her Name,” yet she isn’t. Princess Daenerys Targaryen, the first in her name, was the daughter of King Aegon IV and his wife (and sister), Naerys. The Lannisters aren’t the only eccentric characters in the Seven Kingdoms!
7. Not the Last, Either
Throughout the series and much of the books, Daenerys believes she is the last of the line, as her brother tells her that they are the only members of their family to survive Robert’s rebellion. But she has another relative: Jon Snow, who was thought to be Ned Stark’s bastard son but is the son of Lyanna Stark (Ned’s sister) and Rhaegar Targaryen (Daenerys’ older brother).
8. Mother of Dragons
Although Daenerys does not give birth to dragons in the traditional sense, she has brought them back into the world after they were thought to be extinct. Daenerys passed through Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre with three dragon eggs and escaped unscathed, carrying living young dragons on her shoulders.
9. There Used To Be Other Dragonlords
Targaryens as dragonlords. Even though their familial line and nearly the whole dragon species were all but destroyed, they were still considered as such. Before the Doom of Valryia, several other families were recognized as dragonlords. TheTargaryens were the only family to survive the apocalypse, or so fans have been told thus far
10. They Know The Secrets Of The Red Keep
Specific castles are equally significant to the plot as various families. Each major kingdom and family is connected with a certain castle, many of which are the seats of power in various regions of Westeros and beyond. The Targaryens built the Red Keep in King’s Landing as the actual seat of authority for the Seven Kingdoms. But there are, or were, many secrets concealed within its walls.

12. Daenerys Was Conned By Pyat Pree And Had Her Dragons Stolen
Her followers arrived at Qarth on the verge of death, and she temporarily relaxed her vigilance and regretted it. A sinister local warlock named Pyat Pree even went so far as to transport Daenerys’ dragons to the House of the Undying, intending to cage her and her dragons there. Daenerys, furious, would eventually emerge, her dragons and opponents dead or exposed.
